The 1919 Paris Peace Conference
FEATURED MEMBER OF THE INQUIRY IS WILLIAM CURTIS FARABEE. IT WAS FARABEE’S WORK THAT CONFIRMED MENDELLIAN HEREDITY IN MAN. FARABEE WAS A STUDENT OF WILLIAM E CASTLE AT HARVARD. HIS DISSERTATION ENTITLED ‘HEREDITY AND SEXUAL INFLUENCES IN MERISTIC VARIATION’ WAS PUBLISHED IN 1903 AND ASSISTED WILLIAM BATESON IN THE POPULARIZATION OF MENDEL AS THE FOUNDER OF GENETICS.
FARABEE LED THREE SEVERAL EXPEDITIONS INTO THE AMAZON JUNGLE AND WAS FACE TO FACE WITH NATIVE TRIBES WHO HAD NEVER SEEN WHITE MAN BEFORE. LIKE MANY IN THIS STORY FARABEE IS BARELY KNOWN TODAY DESPITE HIS SIGNIFICANT CONTRIBUTIONS TO SCIENCE. FARABEE WAS A MILITARY INTELLIGENCE CHIEF DURING THE 1919 PEACE CONFERENCE AND PRESIDENT OF THE AMERICAN ANTHROPOLOGICAL ASSOCIATION. FARABEE DIED FROM DISEASE CONTRACTED IN THE JUNGLE SHORTLY AFTER THE PARIS PEACE CONFERENCE IN 1925.
